A contract has now been signed with Petrobras for classification services for a VLCC tanker conversion into an FPSO, to be named the Petrobras-58, or simply P-58. The P-58 will be the first Petrobras-owned FPSO to be classed by DNV.

P-58 will operate in Parque das Baleias’ north fields, Campos’ Basin, located offshore in Espírito Santo state south coast, and will be spread moored in a maximum water depth of 1,400 metres. The unit will be designed for at least 25 years of uninterrupted operation without the need for dry-docking.

The process plant will have the following capacity:
- production and treatment of 47,700 m3/day of liquids
- 28,620 m3/day of crude oil
- gas compression capacity of 6,000,000 m3/d and
- de-sulphated water injection capacity of 57,500 m3/day

Oil production will come from 19 satellite wells connected individually to the unit. Water will be injected into 10 satellite wells.

The classification contract for the conversion phase will last for 56 months and includes the design review of the basic design, FEED, detailed design, hull conversion survey, modules fabrication survey, integration and offshore commissioning. The classification services will mainly be carried out by DNV in Brazil, since the design and most of the conversion work will be performed locally.

About DNV
DNV is a global provider of risk management services, helping customers to safely and responsibly improve their business perf ormance. DNV is an independent foundation with the purpose of safeguarding life, property and the environment. Through its network of 300 offices in 100 countries, the company serves a range of industries with a special focus on the maritime and energy sectors, combining its technology expertise and industry knowledge.

The operation of Mobile Offshore Units (MOUs) for the exploration and production of offshore oil and gas reserves poses tough challenges with regard to documentation of acceptable safety standards. Basis for classification is DNV’s own rules, which have been developed over decades. These rules combine the most advanced theoretical evaluations with our longstanding experience with ships and offshore units operating in the marine environment. They also incorporate relevant internationally recognised industry standards for specific safety issues.
